Deep Dive: Switching from Wordtune to Apple Writing Tools
Trade-offs, installation & data architecture
What you trade away
It rewrites and changes tone, but it offers fewer side-by-side alternatives and less granular sentence-level control than Wordtune.
How to deploy Apple Writing Tools
Built into current macOS, iOS and iPadOS; enable Apple Intelligence and let the required models download
What it takes to run
Requires Apple Intelligence-compatible Apple hardware, a supported language/region and several gigabytes of downloaded models
Where your data lives
Edits are applied to text in the host app rather than kept in a separate Writing Tools library; on-device requests stay local, Private Cloud Compute says request data is not stored, and optional ChatGPT receives the selected content
Why fork Apple Writing Tools instead of vibe-coding a Wordtune clone?
The core loop is small enough for a capable coding agent to produce a useful local version in one sitting. For Wordtune, rewrite selected sentences for tone, length, fluency, and clarity with side-by-side choices. The hard boundary is browser and document integrations plus proprietary rewrite quality, plus polish, integrations, and proprietary language models.
