Deep Dive: Switching from Skillshare to LearnHouse
Trade-offs, installation & data architecture
What you trade away
LearnHouse has no marketplace or supplied tutorial catalog, and self-hosting turns the library owner into the platform operator.
How to deploy LearnHouse
Run npx learnhouse@latest setup; its CLI generates Docker Compose configuration and starts the services
What it takes to run
Self-hosting requires Docker and Node, then domain/DNS/SSL plus storage and email configuration
Where your data lives
Courses and users in PostgreSQL with pgvector, Redis for transient state, and files in local or S3-compatible storage
Why fork LearnHouse instead of vibe-coding a Skillshare clone?
A consolation build is possible, but the paid product's decisive value sits outside a solo rebuild. For Skillshare, organize user-owned tutorial videos and learning projects in a private library. The hard boundary is licensed creator catalog, teacher marketplace, community, discovery, and apps, plus content, pedagogy, and network.
