Deep Dive: Switching from Pimsleur to Anki
Trade-offs, installation & data architecture
What you trade away
Anki does not include Pimsleur's copyrighted audio course or hands-free conversational pacing; the learner must create every prompt.
How to deploy Anki
Use the Windows installer, macOS DMG or official Linux launcher
Where your data lives
Local profile files including collection.anki2, collection.media and backups; exports use .apkg/.colpkg, with optional AnkiWeb sync
Why fork Anki instead of vibe-coding a Pimsleur clone?
A consolation build is possible, but the paid product's decisive value sits outside a solo rebuild. For Pimsleur, organize user-owned audio lessons with spaced recall prompts and progress. The hard boundary is licensed audio curriculum, pedagogy, mobile apps, and language catalog, plus content, pedagogy, and network.
